Equality & Diversity

SAFEXPLAIN team is committed to contribute to equal opportunities and diversity in the community.

Our partner institutions have clear policies on the subject, some of which are listed here:

We will pursue the following two activities to raise awareness of the importance of equality, diversity and inclusion:

  • Establish a gender, diversity and equality committee whose objectives will be to advocate for raising awareness of gender, diversity and equality issues, both internally and externally of the SAFEXPLAIN project.
  • Create particular promotional campaigns supporting international initiatives such as International Day of Women and Girls in Science (11 February), International Women’s Day 2022 (8 March) and European Diversity Month (May).

Irune Agirre moderates "Trustworthy AI in Safety-Critical Systems" panel

The event opened with a welcome by Irune Agirre, Dependability and Cybersecurity Methods Team Leader from IKERLAN, who introduced the project coordinators organizing the event and recalled their shared mission: to reconcile AI techniques with safety and ethical requirements to improve explainability, traceability and runtime assurance for critical embedded systems.

Building the diversity continuum in cutting-edge techonologies and more at HiPEAC 2025

IKERLAN’s Irune Yarza presented “Ensuring Functional Safety in AI-based critical systems: A railway case study” as part of the workshop, Women@HPC Mar WHPC chapter: Building the diversity continuum in cutting-edge technologies, held on 21 January 2025.

Valeria Dallara from exida development speaks at “A-SPICE® for Machine Learning: Best Practices from theSAFEXPLAIN project”

SAFEXPLAIN was well-represented at the INTACS event “Optimal Performance of Modern Development: Automotive SPICE® Fusion with Intelligent Systems and Agile Frameworks” hosted by SEITech Solutions GmbH as part of the Gate4SPICE. In addition to a keynote by Carlo Donzella, the project counted with a a dedicated workshop focused on “A-SPICE® for Machine Learning: Best Practices from theSAFEXPLAIN project”. The event offered the chance to deepen the mutual interest between two communities not always much in touch (EU research and development and the German car industry).

Irune Yarza Opens the SAFEXPLAIN webinar series with an intro to the “Towards functional safety managemet for AI-based critical systems” webinar

On 4 July 2024, speakers from IKERLAN shared an in-depth look into the SAFEXPLAIN project developments in AI-Functional Safety Management (FSM) methodology. Dr Irune Yarza and Dr Javier Fernández Muñoz guided the 33 participants from industry, research institutes and academia through the HiPEAC-hosted webinar on, “Towards functional safety managemet for AI-based critical systems”. The webinar provided attendees with a comprehensive understanding of the challenges and opportunites associated with integrating AI into safety-critical systems, while also offering practical insights and strategies for ensuring the continued safety and reliability of such systems.

Irune Yarza from IKERLAN participated in a panel “AI for Safety-Critical Systems: How “I” Should the AI be?”

Irune was one of three women researchers who delved into technological, safety, and ethical concerns of artificial intelligence. The session was moderated by Cristina Seceleanu from Mälardalen University Sweden and counted with the participation of: Kerstin Bach (Norwegian University of Science and Technology), Marta Barroso (Barcelona Supercomputing Center) and Irune Yarza (Ikerlan).

Irune Agirre Presents SAFEXPLAIN at Mixed Critical Systems Workshop at HiPEAC 2024

SAFEXPLAIN, presented by Irune Agirre from IKERLAN, formed part of the afternoon session on “Artificial Intelligent Dependable Autonomous Systems”, chaired by Kim Grüttner, Head of the Department at German Aerospace Center (DLR). Fellow participants Safe.trAIn and ECOMOBILITY delved into different approaches to autonomous systems.
